Robert Francis Prevost was chosen the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday and the name Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first Pope of the United States and defasting conventional wisdom before the conclave that any American would be very likely to become a pontiff.
A white smoke from a chimney on the Sistine Chapel pointed out that the cardinals were kidnapped for two days had chosen a new leader the 1,400 million Roman Catholics in the world. As Pope, Leo XIV will face difficult decisions about the direction of the Church, Chieffly will continue the agenda of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who defended greater inclusion and openness to change until his death last month, or different.
The cardinals reached their decision after being in conclave for a little more than 24 hours, and after several voting rounds. The Group of 133 Cardinals, the most to meet in a conclave, included, many were appointed by Francis and some that were not known. That had caused a quick consensus to be a serious challenge, given the wide group of contestants and the divisions between them on the future of the Church.
Despite its American roots, Cardinal Prevost, a polyglot born in 69 -year -old Chicago, is seen as a partner who transcends borders. It served for two decades in Peru, where he became bishop and naturalized citizen, then rose to lead his international religious order. Until Francis’s death, he held one of the most influential Vatican positions, directing the office that selects and manages bishops worldwide.
Member of the Order of San Agustín, the Francisco answer in their commitment to the poor and the migrants and with meet people where they are. He told the official Vatican news website last year “The Bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom.”
It has spent much of his life outside the United States. Ordered in 1982 at age 27, he resorted to a doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquino in Rome. In Peru, he was a missionary, pastor, teacher and bishop. As the leader of the Augustinians, he visited orders worldwide and speak Spanish and Italian.
Often described as reserved and discreet, it stylistically turned away from Francis as Pope. Supporters believe that the advisory process initiated by Francis will probably continue to invite the laity to meet with the bishops.
It is not clear if you will be so open to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics as Francis. Althhehe has not said much recently, in 2012, in 2012 to the bishops, the regret that the Western media and popular culture encouraged “sympathy for beliefs and practices that disagree with the Gospel.” He cited the “homosexual lifestyle” and “alternative families composed of same -sex partners and their adopted children.”
Hello, like many other cardinals, you have received criticism about your treatment with accused priests or sexual abuse.
