Social tariffs for water bills
According to the Money Saving Expert website, millions of households are eligible for social tariffs, but haven’t applied and are missing out on around £160 a year.
The cost of water is increasing far faster than inflation, and experts at Money Wellness say prices could rise by up to 36% by 2030. But while most people are aware of the energy support that’s available, far fewer know there are also hardship schemes and social tariffs to help with water bills.
Matthew Sheeran, a money adviser and utilities expert at Money Wellness, said: “32% of the people we’ve helped in the first three months of the year were already in arrears to their water provider. With bills having rocketed on 1 April, we expect to see far more people struggling with water debt.
“Water is a priority debt – if you can’t pay, your supplier can’t disconnect you, but they can take legal action. That’s why it’s so important to get ahead of the problem. Contact your water company as soon as you fall behind or start to struggle. They can help.”
