The United Kingdom Prime Minister has said that he is considering that British visas can be issued based on how countries well cooperate with the United Kingdom on issues such as recovering failed asylum seekers.
Sir Keir Starmer told journalists that it favors a “much more transactional” approach to the problem, since the government admits that the situation on the Canal de la Mancha is “deteriorating.”
Gathering in the lateral lines of the G7 summit in Canada, Sir Keir and French president Emmanuel Macron agreed to “work closely” to address the crosses, said a spokesman of NO 10.
Downing Street added that both leaders agreed that migration should be a key approach to their meetings that conduct the president’s state visit to the United Kingdom in July.
The official figures show that more than 1,500 migrants crossed the small boat channel last week, which took the total of the year to approximately 16,000, 42% higher than at the same point last year.
“It is a serious challenge that requests a serious answer,” Sir Keir told journalists at the summit in Kananaskis in Canadian rockies.
“We are seeing problems such as a more EMAR use of our visas, observing whether we must go to the work that the countries we are dealing with are doing on preventive measures and return returns,” he said.
He said he was looking at what the Government could do in the refund agreements of illegal migrants with other countries.
“We have made a number or bilateral returns agreements. Therefore, the question is, again, if it is possible to go a little beyond that.
“We are including observing this visa issue now and if we cannot be a bit more intelligent with the use of our visas in relation to countries that do not have a return agreement with us.”
He added that this would be more “transactional” as an approach.
“But you know, do we need to do more?” Hey said.
“Yes, we do it, and it is working together that I think we can achieve it. But it was a central part of my discussion, certainly with France, with Germany and Italy.”
The ministers have been pressing so that the French government implements new rules to facilitate the interception of ships.
In 2023, the previous conservative government reached an agreement to give France almost 500 million of approximately three years to go to additional officers to help prevent migrants from making the trip.
Official figures show that the French authorities have intercepted less than 58% of the boats of boats registered this year.
In March, the Secretary of the Interior, Yvette Cooper, said that the French government, reviewing its policies to close the surveillance of small boats, and the last days have seen a more aggressive position of the French police.
The BBC understands that the French authorities will present a new “maritime doctrine” from the beginning of July, to allow special squadrons to intercept migrant boats up to 300 m from the coast.
The change in tactics is expected to be presented at the Summit of the United Kingdom on July 8.
House office sources have described change in tactics as a possible “change of play.”
Government sources also say that there is intelligence to suggest a recent increase in violence in migrant camps near Calais can have a dining scarcity.
It occurs when the French authorities reported that the smuggers are changing the tactics to launch the so -called “taxi boats” of new sites and more speed.
Instead of inflating their ships in the dunes along the coast, near the police patrols, the gangs are throwing them from better hidden locations, before picking up the customers waiting in the sea, out of the reach of the police.
The BBC has seen images of the Police Chamber that show people throwing rocks to the officers and even holding a small child in front of the police to try to stop them, while a woman said he uses tear gas in the crowds.
The Secretary of the Interior of the Conservative Shadow, Chris Philp, said that “the crisis of the channel is leaving control” under the surveillance of Sir Keir.
“The gangs laugh, the ships continue to arrive, and the work response is to form another working group and celebrate a summit. It is weak and is muddy,” he added.
Labor campaigned in the promise to “crush the gangs of criminal boats” that brings migrants to the United Kingdom, and Sir Keir has made addressing illegal immigration and “restore the order” to the asylum system is a priority for the government.
After coming to the government, Labor immediately eliminated the conservative government plan to deport asylum applicants to Rwanda, redirecting funds to improve border security initiatives.
But channel crosses have reached 40,000 from the Tok Labor Office in July 2024, an increase of 21% in the same period of the previous year.
During the same period, 940 ships have been intercepted, preventing almost 28,000 migrants from reaching the United Kingdom.
The Government has indicated the good climate and the will of people’s smuggers to put more people in small boats such as factors that drive the increase in migration crosses.
He has led the conservatives to accuse the ministers or “blame the climate” for the increase in numbers.
