Prime Minister Michelle O’Neill will travel to Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday.
It will join political leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin and Prime Minister of Scotland, John Swinney, at the ceremony.
O’Neill had cut a family vacation so that plans could be made to attend the funeral.
Prime Minister Emma Little-Penegelly has confirmed that he will not attend.
Rinancando tribute after his death on Monday, O’Neill said that Pope Francis’s efforts to “communicate and recognize adjustment errors should be recognized.”
The vice president of Sinn Fein also remembered his visit to Ireland in 2018, where “he spoke passionately in support of the peace process.”
Other members of the Assembly (MLA) in Stormant will pay tribute to Pope Francis in the Assembly next week once he returns from Easter holidays.
O’Neill is expected to travel to Rome later on Friday.
It will also attend the funeral, Archbishop Eamon Martin, Catholic primacy from full Ireland.
