The families of five people killed by Hashem Abedi in Manchester Arena bombing have told the Secretary of Justice of his “absolute disbelief” that he was allowed to attack the prison officers in HMP Frankland.

The families say they understood that the prison meant “confinement in a cell for 23 hours a day, meals served through a hatch and a single hour outside the cell, accompanied by an officer of the prison”, whom they described as “the minimum measure.”
They write: “In our opinion, no privilege should be allowed while fulfilling a sentence for the death of 22 innocent lives and the injection of many more.
“You should not have access to anything that can arise, such as hot oil or items that you can turn into blades.”

The families asked Mahmood to “consider the complete severity of Abedi’s actions by determining any additional punishment.”
They wrote “their continuous violence in prison, attacking prison officers in Belmarsh and now trying to kill three more, it shows that it does not feel remorse and does not respect human life.
“We send our sincere sympathies to the three prison officers who were kurados on Saturday, as well as their families. You cannot allow Hashem Abedi to hurt anyone else.
“As broken families, we firmly believe that the appropriate punishment for this individual should be permanent solitary confinement. In truth, anything harder would be more appropriate.”
