The death of the Pope was confirmed by a Vatican official this morning.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican Camerlengo, from the chapel of he Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived.
He said: “At 7.35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the Father’s House. All his life dedicated himself to the service of the Lord and his Church,” he said.
“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, special for the poorest and most marginalized.
“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we recommend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinity and merciful love of God, one and tribe.”
King Charles and Stretch Tribute to the Pope after death
In a statement, King Charles said: “My wife and I were more deeply saddened when he learned of the death of Pope Francis.
“However, our heavy hearts have relieved themselves a bit to know that holiness could share a Easter greeting with the Church and the world that served with such devotion through their life and ministry.
“His holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith, and with those of goodwill who work for the benefit of others.
“His belief that care for creation is an existential expression of faith in God resonated with so many worldwide.
“Through their work and care for both people and the planet, the life of so many touched deeply.
“The queen and I remember with particular affection our meetings with her holiness over the years and we were very moved to have visited it at the beginning of the month.
“We send our most sincere condolences and a deep sympathy to the church to which the innumerable people from all over the world who, inspired by their life, will be mourning by the devastating loss of this faithful follower of Jessus.”
