Dr. Anjum Afshan, 62, walked to take a bus after work when she was killed in a “frankly tragic incident” after being and running during January 12, 2023.
Gulamo Restula, or Harrow, was supposedly reversing from an entrance to the Clayponds Rehabilitation Hospital in Ealing in a van, according to old Bailey.
Just an hour later, Dr. Afshan was declared dead.
Restula, 58, declared himself innocent to the death of medicines for careless driving.
Dr. Afshan was hit behind and launched forward by the impact, but the truck continued to reversed and was trapped by the rear axle, according to the court.
His afflicted relatives left the court when the incident’s CCTV images were played at the Restula trial on Wednesday.
Prosecutor Frederick Hookway said he was allegedly reversing at that time in a Mercedes sprinter with a cash trailer that does not have an audible investment alarm.
It is unknown exactly what checks were made before starting to reverse the parking lot.
Hookway told the jury: “In this case, the Prosecutor’s Office invites him to conclude that the driving was careless because the defendant reversed through a parking lot doing adequate controls of his blind spot, and Soo was intentional to move.
“I knew that the pedestrians shared this space with their vehicle, so it was up to him to make sure that no one was behind his truck before reversing.”
He added: “There is no doubt that it was the incident that involved the defendant’s vehicle that caused the death of Dr. Afshan.
“Probably the central problem and the main thing for you to solve when you consult your verdict is your evaluation of the defendant’s driving standard and how that contributed to this incident.”
The vehicles of the size of the truck do not have to have installed cameras or reverse alarms, according to the court.
A post Mortem exam later gave the cause of the death of Dr. Afshan as a injury for falling in love with the chest and traumatic ashyxia.
Their various injuries were consistent with having been thrown forward by the initial impact, and then set under the truck, according to the court.
The hospital was one of the regular remote fallen for food delivery.
Minutes before the incident, it was a childbirth to the hospital and Dr. Afshan then leaves for the same entrance.
In his police interview, Restula said he had seen Dr. Afshan leave but then lost sight of.
He checked his mirrors before reverse, but he did not see any obstacle and stopped after some signal of what had happened.
In a statement, the colleague of Dr. Afshan, Robert Holloway, who was also in the parking lot, recalled to have seen the truck revoking on her.
He immediately used the hospital to get help and returned to Dr., who was “under the vehicle and was shocked.”
The Prosecutor’s Office says that due to the design of the Mercedes with its large rear load box, that a pedestrian that was walking around 20 meters behind and towards the midline of the vehicle would not be seen in the rear mirrors.
This was similar to the position in which Dr. Afshan was when he invested and hit it and “it follows that the mirror controls were not enough to detect some at that effective blind spot of the vehicle,” according to Mr. Hookway.
The road code advises drivers to check the blind points and look for pedestrians before reverse.
