The interview, which will be broadcast on Saturday, is ahead of a Disney+ documentary that promises an “intimate and unprecedented look” in Flintoff’s sports career and his return to the public eye after the accident.
“Then, obviously, there are the physical scars that I have. But then the mental side,” he told Jonathan Ross.
“I did not leave the house for probable six or eight months. The only times I left the house was for medical appointments and surgeries,” he said.
The former land of England also revealed that he had “about five or six go out of the room” and “talk to myself in the mirror” to help overcome his anxiety when he returned to the world of Crick as coach.
“I wouldn’t show me without a facial mask for anyone. It was like starting again.”
In a trailer released Thursday for the 90 -minute Disney+ documentary, Flintoff describes his “vivid” memories of the accident and says he can remember “everything about him.”
A fixed image is shown shortly after the incident, which represents the staff and the team that attend a starry vehicle on the Top Gear test track in Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey.
Flintoff said filming the next documentary was “quite strange” at the beginning.
“From the accident, they had flashbacks, nightmares and things … You’re talking about that, you’re talking a lot about that,” he said.
“I enjoy seeing Crick’s pieces, I would like there to be more of them. The most difficult part is to see people talk about you.”
He added: “I retired so long ago, it almost seems like a different life. How to look from the outside.”
Flintoff’s family, the creator of Gavin and Stacey, James Corden, and comedian Jack Whitehall also appear on the documentary trailer, which is broadcast from April 25.
Flintoff, one of the most successful Cricket players in England, said he is “loving” his return to Sport Coaching England Lions: the development team under the Male Cricket team in England.
“I think, with everything that has happened in recent years, that is the only place where I feel more comfortable,” he told Jonathan Ross.
“That time I probably needed it more, Cricket hugged me again,” he said.
