The officers were called to around 1.40 am today (April 24) for reports from an altercation in Baffin Way.
Emergency services, including the London ambulance service and the London Fire Brigade, also attended the scene.
A 26 -year -old man suffered minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.
Subsequently it was confirmed that the substance was not corrosive.
No judgments have been made, and police investigations are Ons.
The Metropolitan Police urges anyone who has witnessed the incident or has relevant information to present.
Witnesses are asked to call 101 and quote reference number 493/24 APR.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “The police were called at 1.40 am on Thursday, April 24 for reports from Canary Wharf.
“The officers joined the London ambulance service next to the London Fire Brigade in Baffin Way, E14, where a man had supposedly been attacked, with an unknown substance that threw him.
“The 26 -year -old man received minor injuries in the incident.
“Hey, did not require medical treatment.
“It was confirmed that the substance was not corrosive.
“No judgments have been made.
“If you witness, call the police at 101 with reference 493/24 Apr.”
