
Around 350 employees of the University of Edinburgh have accepted voluntary redundancy as part of a cost savings effort.
In a letter to staff, director Sir Peter Mathieson also confirmed that academic promotions would be frozen for the period 2025-26.
The university has affirmed that it needs to reduce costs by approximately 140 million, but the unions have called it a “crisis manufactured.”
A vote that asks if the staff would consider going to the strike until May 20.
He said that academic promotions would stop “until [the university] Achieve a more stable financial position. “
“The voluntary compensation scheme of the University has concluded and around 350 employees will have voluntary compensation, which will offer year -on -year savings of approximately 18 million,” he said.
“Together with recruitment limitations and a break in academic promotions, more work will be needed to achieve a long -term stable and sustainable staff and we have time to consult our approach.
“We appreciate that this is causing uncertainty within our community. We continue to link with our joint unions and we are providing periodic updates as we take the necessary measures to guarantee a sustainable financial texture.”
