The chief of the cookie factory, where the Mcvitions chocolate digestives have made their legs during the last 100 years, acknowledges that people have always eaten them incorrectly.
Anthony Coulon, general manager of the company’s chocolate refinery and bakery in stockport, said the Theatime Stapper was originally destined to be eaten with the side covered with chocolate down.
“It is the most incredible debate in the world, whether you have chocolate at the top or chocolate at the bottom,” reflected Mr. Coulson, who admitted that he was a chocolate man at the top.
The factory opened in 1917, with the chocolate digestive launched eight years later.
Around 80 million packages are made each year, with all the chocolate made at Greater Manchester.
The chocolate digestive was launched approximately a quarter of a century after the simple variety, whose name was inspired by the belief that baking powder would help with digestion.
Lynn Loftus, who has worked at the factory for 36 years, called the “timeless” cookie, adding that he thought he would be present for many years.
Craig Leech, who has worked at Mcvitions for 21 years, began at the factory by placing the chocolate on top of the cookies.
“I only come with a positive attitude. I know people and products from inside,” said Mr. Leech, who is now a refinery planning manager.
Alix Knagg, who has legs working there for six months, said that the chocolate digestive “was still a great product 100 years later.”
