The King and Queen expressed their “more sincere condolences and deep sympathy” after the death of Pope Francis.
In an official message posted after the news of the death of Pope Francis today, Charles said: “My wife and I were very deeply sad when he learned of the death of Pope Francis.
“However, our heavy hearts have relieved a bit to know that holiness could share a Easter greeting with the Church and the world that served with such devotion through their life and ministry.
“His holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith, and with those of goodwill who work for the benefit of others.
“His belief that care for creation is an existential expression of faith in God resonated with so many worldwide.
