King Charles has said that he and Queen Camilla were “deeply sad” before the news of Pope Francis’s death, since they paid tribute to his “compassion” and “tireless commitment” with people of faith.
The king said in a statement issued by Buckingham Palace that his “heavy hearts” had been “a little relieved” by the Pope, to “share Anaster’s greeting with the church and the world he served with such devotion.”
The King, next to Camilla, with the Pontiff on a state visit to Italy earlier this month, one of several who said he remembered with “particular affection.”
The royal couple had a private meeting with Pope Francis, where he wished them a happy twenty wedding anniversary.
