What happens when the Pope dies?
According to the BBC, a “less complex” process will be carried out after the death of Pope Francis.
The station said: “A papal funeral has traditionally worsened an elaborate matter, but Pope Francis recently approved plans to make the entire procedure less complex.
“The previous pontiffs were buried in three nested coffins made of cypresses, lead and oak. Pope Francis has opted for a simple wooden coffin full of zinc.
“It has also discarded the tradition of placing the Pope’s body on an elevated platform, known as Catafalque, in the Basilica of San Pedro for public visualization.
“On the other hand, the mourners will be invited to present their respects while their body remains inside the coffin, with the eliminated member.
“Francis will also be the first Pope in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican. He will be buried in the Basilica or Santa María Mayor, one of the four main papal basilicas in Rome.”
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, like Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis was the son of Italian immigrants.
Eager for education, he studied philosophy and theology at the Archdiocesean Seminary of Buenos Aires, where he obtained his doctorate in theology.
At 33, he became an ordered priest later as rector of the philosophical and theological faculty of San Miguel.
In 1992, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires before becoming the archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998.
