The Coast Guard of Ireland received a call around 22:55 BST with a rescue helicopter from the HM coast guard of the United Kingdom sent to help, as well as a fixed -wing plane.
The search continues on Sunday afternoon.
The Coast Guard of Ireland said that the missing man is believed to have left for the board of a yacht in the United Kingdom 16 nautical miles to the south of Dunmore East in the sea of Ireland.
His coordination center in Dublin received a 999 call in Dublin of the Yate requesting assistance.
Sunday’s search will continue with the help of a Waterford helicopter and a lifemade lifeboat.
