The former Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson died at the age of 36.
He was diagnosed with cancer for the third time in April last year, five years after he retired from playing.
It was discovered that Thompson had lymphoma in stage four, a type of blood cancer, which had spread to his lungs after recovering twice from the duration of the disease in his career as a player.
The player born in the bathroom began and finished his career with Rochdale, and had three spells with the club.
Rochdale said they were “devastated” and that he had died peacefully at home on Thursday with his family by his side.
“First we met Joe mainly as a talented footballer, but we would say he grows up to worship the love and infectious personality,” said Rochdale.” external
“Hello, each battle faced, both inside and outside the field. His trip and his indomitable spirit have an inspiration for all those who have been touched by their history.
“Above all that, Joe was a loving husband of Chantelle and an incredible father of Tailula and Athena Rae.
“Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this incredible sad moment.”
