South Park was the worst affected area for wastewater spills in eastern London last year, according to the new data of the Environment Agency.
The latest figures reveal that there were 58 spills of wastewater on the park’s river route, Loxford Water, which lasted 252 hours in total.
These are three spills more than in 2023, and additional 81 hours of wastewater flowing to water.

Thames Water, who manages the removal of wastewater in the Great London, said the spills were the result of “storm disads” after parts of the region experienced “some of the wettest months in 250 years.”

A spokesman said to this document: “This overvalued our Serwer network that turned out that diluted wastewater was released to the rivers.
“While all storm dencarges are unacceptable, wastewater systems were designed in this way to prevent wastewater from accelerating in people’s homes.”
They added that Thames Water plans to update more than 250 storm overflows in the next five years to reduce the amount of Disars, including Beckton’s wastewater treatment works.
Loxford Water flows from South Park to Barking Park and is also a tributary of the Roding River.
The Redbridge Council previously urged Thames Water to clean the river, with a motion agreed at a meeting of the Council on March 20 to “maintain pressure on the relevant authorities” to address wastewater.
The motion added that the council “will continue to advocate for urgent action” to stop wastewater spills in the bearing and their tributaries.
Cllr Jo Blackman said at a meeting of the Council that the state of the country’s river tracks did the situation with the rotation “part of a national scandal.”
