For base football organized in England, the age groups correlate with the school years, and the name of the age groups is the child’s age, the beginning of that school year. For example, children under 10 teams are 9 years old on August 31, so start the year 5 at school.
Children can play an age group only up to 15 years, and not an age group (unless exceptional circumstances*). Below are the appropriate age group for your child to look for a team to play:
- Year 2 – Less 7
- Year 3 – Less 8
- Year 4 – Less 9
- Year 5 – Less than 10
- Year 6 – Less 11
- Year 7 – Less 12
- Year 8 – Less 13
- Year 9 – Less 14
- Year 10 – Less 15
- Year 11 – Children under 16 years and more

Up to 10 years, organized football is known as mini football by FA and thesis teams in these age groups do not play in formal leagues and the results are not published. These years should be about the development and learning and preparation of children to move on to competitive football. The soccer official becomes “competitive” of children under 12 years when results and league boards can be published.
Year 1 and minor FA rules claim that a child cannot play football organized in a real game until he has achieved his sixth birthday. You will find clubs and organizations that have ‘teams’ in Ages U5 and U6 and these should be introduction to football with trained training programs appropriate for their ages, with the focus on promoting fundamental movement (agility, danger and coordination.
