Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black elated after welcoming second child via surrogate

Tom Daley and his husband Dustin Lance Black celebrated the arrival of their second child together.

The 28-year-old Olympic diver and his spouse, 48, announced their surprise baby news on Wednesday.

They had not previously shared they were expecting another child.

News of Tom and his partner’s latest addition was shared in The Times with a statement that announced their second son, Phoenix Rose, was born on March 28 via surrogate.

‘Black-Daley on 28th March to Thomas Robert Daley and Dustin Lance Black, a son, Phoenix Rose.’

After tying the knot in May 2017 at Bovey Castle in Devon, the couple welcomed their first child – a son called Robert Ray – via surrogacy one year later on June 27, 2018.

The Olympian revealed they had decided to use an American surrogate because surrogates and parents were not afforded the same legal rights as they were in the U.S.

He explained at the time: ‘We looked into it in the UK and in the US.

‘In the UK it’s a lot more complicated because surrogates aren’t as well protected legally, intended parents aren’t protected legally, it’s just not safe, there’s a lot of hurdles to have to jump over.

‘In the US, everything is regulated in a way that keeps everyone safe and in the US the surrogacy process is a lot more streamlined.’

The star also shared that he and his husband were keen to have a child together to carry on their lineage after both experienced losing loved ones.

He told Giovanna Fletcher on her Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast in May 2022: ‘Lance and I […] had lost so many people in our families and there was something about surrogacy that we were drawn to that just meant that we could pass on the people that we’d lost, their genes and their thoughts, their feelings, their personalities and being able to bring someone into the world, that felt so extremely special.’
