Queen Elizabeth style file: a look back over the fashion choices of our longest-reigning monarch

Having been head of the United Kingdom for longer than any other monarch – or person, for that matter – Queen Elizabeth has made her fair share of style statements.

And this sartorial image is being re-visited in the hit Netflix series, The Crown, which returns to our screens today.

Seasom three of the series focuses on the royal family between the years of 1964 – 1977 and stars Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II.

In terms of her style, 93-year-old Queen Elizabeth II has a penchant for pastels and is particularly fond of elegant yet un-fussy skirt suit

There are two notable couturiers who she has remained particularly loyal to over the years; Norman Hartnell for a dressier occasion (he was commissioned to create her coronation and wedding gowns) and Hardy Amies for her daytime wardrobe.

Well known for her white gloves, pearl necklaces and reliable Launer handbags, Her Majesty has established herself as not only our longest serving monarch, but perhaps our most stylish too.

While she has generally always opted to wear fur, it was recently revealed that the monarch has made history as the first royal to denounce fur in her wardrobe completely.

For The Crown’s wardrobe director Amy Roberts, designing the outfits of the characters has been the biggest commission of her career – she’s created over 600 original costumes from scratch for Series 3.
